Martial Arts Profile of Ronald L. Lindsey
Sensei Lindsey began his martial arts career in 1963 with the study of Shotokan. He studied Karate in Okinawa for a little less than 3 years (1968, 1969 and 1970). In Okinawa, he studied Shorin Ryu Matsumura Seito Karate and Kobudo under Seisan Kinjo, Hohan Soken and Fusei Kise. Sensei Lindsey was among the first group of Americans to study Shorin Ryu Matsumura Seito. He also studied Ueichi Ryu under Master Shinjo at Kadena Circle and Okinawa Kenpo under Master Odo.
Sensei Lindsey organized and was the USA Director of Grand-master Fusei Kise’s Kenshin Kan Association from 1978 – 1984 and was the USA Director of Grandmaster Yuichi Kuda’s Shorin Ryu Matsumura Kenpo Association from 1984 – 1989.
In the 1980’s, Sensei Lindsey began extensive research on Fukein Chinese and Okinawan White Crane Karate styles and systems. Eventually this research led Sensei Lindsey to Grandmaster Takaya Yabiku. Sensei Yabiku had been a student of Hohan Soken for about 20 years and had researched the White Crane Styles of Okinawa in great depth.
In addition to researching Okinawan White Crane, Sensei Lindsey has researched the original system of Hohan Soken. In this endeavor Mr. Lindsey was greatly assisted by many people in pursuing this goal. The Shorin Ryu Matsumura Seito that Sensei Lindsey practices is very accurate and very close to the style practiced by the late Grand-master Hohan Soken.
Currently it is popular among certain individuals to declare that Hohan Soken only taught “Sport Karate” to most Americans or greatly changed his system after the mid 1960s or so. These claims are un-founded and are not true. Individuals making such claims do not practice Grandmaster Soken’s style; these individuals talk a lot but do not practice. Sensei Lindsey practices the art and maintains old training methods.
Sensei Lindsey has devoted his adult life to the study and practice of “Ko Ryu” (old style) Karate and Kobujutsu. His specialty is Shorin Ryu Matsumura Seito Karate and Kobujutsu. He also teaches Hakutsuru Karatejutsu and has founded his own Hakutsuru or Whitecrane Style; which he calls Hakutsuru Ryu Matsumura Hakutsuru Karatejutsu. He holds Shihan Licenses (Teaching Licenses) from Hohan Soken, Fusei Kise, Yuichi Kuda and Takaya Yabiku.
Sensei Lindsey has also developed his own system of Kenjutsu. This style is based on the strategies found in Shorin Ryu Matsumura Seito Karate/Kobujutsu and places emphasis on using the sword in realistic situations. This style is called Machimura Ito Ryu.
Sensei Lindsey owns and operates a small traditional dojo in rural Bastrop County, Texas. In 1986 he built this dojo modeling it after Sensei Shinjo’s Uechi Ryu Dojo in Kadena Circle Okinawa. Visitors are welcomed at anytime. In 2000 Sensei Lindsey started the Kokusai Shurite Karate/Kobujutsu Rengokai (International Shurite Karate/Kobujutsu Federation). It is interesting to note that in choosing this name Sensei Lindsey did not use the name “Karate” meaning empty hand but rather he used the older term where “Karate” means Chinese Hand. Mr. Lindsey is available for Seminars; call him at (512) 303-5597 or Email: kobudomei@cebridge.net
In 2006 Sensei Lindsey founded the Kokusai Kobujutsu Hozon Domei (The International Alliance to Preserve the Old Fighting Arts). This will be an educational organization that will bring people of all arts together to combine knowledge and talents to preserve the traditions of the old combat arts. One vehicle that we will use to accomplish this goal is a magazine called “Maishin Shorinji” (the difficult path to reach the Shaolin Temple). This quarterly publication will be a one of a kind document that will go a long way to preserve the traditions.
